The Old Depot Gallery serves as a regional outlet for Western North
Carolina artists and crafts persons and is dedicated to the preservation of the rich
heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Old ideas mingle with fresh concepts and we
continue to expand and grow. New Artists are always welcome.
Criteria
Materials:
- The use of natural materials is strongly encouraged. A 20% guideline is used for
manufactured parts in any construction. Items made primarily from purchased materials
such as clay, Glass, etc., will be judged from the standpoint of design, workmanship,
and uniqueness.
- Kit work, glitter, inappropriate frames, studies or incomplete work, and very large
items will not be accepted.
- Work in different medium by the same artist must be juried separately.
Design:
- All items must be original and creative. The underlying principles of good design-
balance, unity, variety, rhythm, and form should be evident. An appreciation of color theory is also basic.
- In a few instances, such as quilting and needlework, standard patterns may be the springboard for creative interpretation.
In these cases, The Committee will view the pieces with an eye toward technical ability, design principles,
and individual embellishment.
Technical Proficiency:
Each medium requires certain skills. In general, finished work should appear polished and professional.
All work must be complete and ready for display upon acceptance. The following points will apply:
- Functional pieces must meet safety standards for their intended use. The works
"Decorative Use Only" must be clearly visible on items that appear utilitarian but are meant only for display.
- Children's toys should be non-toxic and free from parts that could be accidentally ingested. Fabric used in children's clothing
must meet national fire and safety standards.
- Lead free and food safe glazes must be used on pottery. Oven proof and dishwasher safe items should be marked.
- All food items must meet the standards set by the Buncombe County Board of Health and Safety. Date and ingredients should be
listed. Paraffin seals are unacceptable. The home provider certificate is required.
- Wooden items must be properly constructed, sanded and finished.
- Clothing must be sized and have fabric content and care instructions included.
- Limited edition prints should be signed and numbered in pencil. Copies of original art work should be
labeled as such. All work
must be hard backed and protected.
Marketability:
- An item may meet all of the guidelines and still not fit the philosophy of The Old Depot Gallery. It should be remembered that The
Gallery is intended for traditional rather than very contemporary works.
- Prices should be set by the artist. However, The Committee may recommend changes based on current sales and market value of similar items.
Items are to be shown for sale exclusively at The Old Depot Gallery within
Black Mountain City limits.
Submission:
- Work is accepted between 10 AM and 4 PM on Tuesday through Friday of each week. All items should be tagged and ready for
display and with paperwork complete.
- The jury meets the fourth Thursday of each month to evaluate
pieces. Accepted items will be shown for a period of one year
after which they must be removed by the crafter. Unclaimed items will
become the property of The Gallery after one notice. Rejected work will be accompanied by reasons and
possible suggestions for improvement.
Consignment Agreement:
- Please! read consignment agreement carefully before signing!!
- The Gallery values each artist's work and pledges to handle all items with great
care. However, the organization regrets it cannot be liable for accidental damage or loss.
The Gallery is staffed by volunteers and they may not be able to answer your
questions. In event of further questions, The Gallery Manager may be contacted. Thank you for your interest!
